About

The Universal Converter is the easiest way to convert geospatial data online. Drop in any supported file — Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GPX, GML, GeoPackage, DWG, DXF, CSV, XLSX, TopoJSON, FlatGeobuf and many more — and the format is detected automatically. Pick a target format and download the result: no account, no installation, no upload to any server.

One page, every combination: all 500+ vector and raster format pairs covered by this site can be converted directly in this workspace. There is no need to search for a specific "X to Y" tool page — each of those pages simply pre-loads this same converter with a fixed format pair, so whatever you want to convert, you are always in the right place here.

Both vector and raster data are supported. Vector conversion runs through an in-memory GeoJSON pipeline, so you can move data between virtually any pair of formats. Raster conversions (GeoTIFF, PNG, JPG, WebP and more) are handled by GDAL compiled to WebAssembly.

Coordinate systems are first-class: the source CRS is detected from .prj files or inferred from the coordinates, and you can search any EPSG coordinate system by name or code to reproject the output — all inside your browser.

Everything runs locally on your device using WebAssembly. Your data is never uploaded, which makes the converter safe for confidential or licensed datasets.

One page covers all 580+ format combinations on this site: once the dimension is detected, convert to any target right here, or follow the contextual links below into the vector or raster workspaces for focused format lists and guidance.

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload a file (or a Shapefile group: .shp + .dbf + .shx + .prj). The format is detected automatically.

  2. 2

Check the detected source coordinate system and, if needed, search for the correct one by keyword or EPSG code.

  3. 3

Choose the output format and output coordinate system. By default the output keeps the source coordinate system.

  4. 4

Click Convert, preview the result on the map, and download the converted file.

Common Use Cases

Not sure if your data is vector or raster?

Drop any file in and the converter auto-detects the format, data dimension and coordinate system — no menus to navigate and no prior GIS knowledge required.

Mixed-format project handoffs

Clients and colleagues send SHP, KML, DWG and GeoTIFF? Normalize everything to one target format in a single page instead of hunting for a dedicated tool each time.

Prepare data for web maps

Convert vector layers to GeoJSON or TopoJSON and rasters to PNG or COG — exactly what Leaflet, MapLibre and deck.gl consume.

Standardize before loading a GIS database

Homogenize field data, CAD exports and imagery into GeoPackage before loading into PostGIS or QGIS projects, keeping geometry, attributes and CRS intact.

FAQ

QWhich formats are supported?

AMore than 30 vector formats (Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GPX, GML, GeoPackage, SQLite, DWG, DXF, CSV, XLSX, ODS, TopoJSON, FlatGeobuf, GMT, MIF/MID, DGN, GDB, S-57, TIGER, E00 and more) plus common raster formats such as GeoTIFF, PNG, JPG and WebP. See the Formats page for the full list.

QAre my files uploaded to a server?

ANo. All parsing and conversion runs locally in your browser via WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device.

QHow are coordinate systems handled?

AThe source CRS is read from .prj files when available, or inferred from the coordinates. The output keeps the source CRS by default; you can search any EPSG CRS by keyword or code and reproject the output in one step.

QIs there a file size limit?

AVector files up to 256 MB are accepted. Very large files take longer because processing happens in the browser; a Chromium-based browser with enough memory gives the best results.

QThe detected format or CRS is wrong — what now?

ABoth selectors can be overridden manually: pick the source format from the dropdown and search the source coordinate system by keyword or EPSG code.

QIs it free?

AYes, completely free, with no sign-up and no usage limits.

QHow is this page different from the vector and raster converter pages?

AAll three run the same conversion engine. This page simply decides the vector/raster dimension for you; the dedicated pages pre-filter the format list for one dimension; and every specific pair like SHP to KML keeps its own page with detailed format guidance.

QDoes batch conversion keep each file on its own format?

AYes. Every file is detected and converted independently, so a mixed batch of vector and raster files can produce different targets in one session.

QWhy does conversion run in my browser?

AAll parsing and writing is compiled to WebAssembly and executes locally. Nothing is uploaded, which keeps large or sensitive datasets on your device and lets you keep working offline.
