About

CSV

CSV is a plain text table format with comma-separated columns. In GIS, CSV is commonly used to store tabular data with coordinate columns (such as longitude, latitude). While CSV itself is not a geospatial format, by specifying coordinate fields, tabular data can be converted to geometric features like points, lines, or polygons. CSV is the most common way to export geographic data from spreadsheets, databases, and sensors.

GeoJSON

GeoJSON is a geospatial data interchange format based on JSON. It can represent Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiPoint, MultiLineString, MultiPolygon, and GeometryCollection geometries. Defined by RFC 7946, GeoJSON has become one of the most popular data exchange formats in web GIS. GeoJSON files use WGS84 coordinates and support Feature objects with associated properties and FeatureCollections for organizing multiple features.

Conversion trade-offs

CSV: limitations to know

  • Does not support geometry types (point/line/polygon), only coordinate points
  • No coordinate reference system information
  • Lacks compression for large datasets

GeoJSON: what you gain

  • Human-readable, easy to manually edit and debug
  • Supported by virtually all GIS software and mapping libraries
  • Naturally suited for web applications and API data transmission

Why convert CSV to GeoJSON?

Enormous amounts of geographic data live in spreadsheets: address lists, sensor logs, field surveys, export tables. As long as rows carry latitude and longitude values, that CSV is already a point dataset — it just isn't map-readable. Converting CSV to GeoJSON turns each row into a Point feature with every column attached as a property, instantly usable in Leaflet, QGIS, Mapbox, or any JSON pipeline. It is the quickest route from spreadsheet to interactive map.

Frequently asked questions

How are the coordinate columns detected?

Common header names like lat/latitude and lon/lng/longitude/x are detected automatically. You can also pick the columns manually if the headers are unusual.

What coordinate formats are accepted?

Decimal degrees (like 52.52, 13.40) work directly. Degrees-minutes-seconds values must be converted to decimal degrees first.

Are all other columns kept?

Yes — every non-coordinate column becomes a feature property, including numbers, text, and empty values.

GeoJSON at a glance

Key Features

  • Based on standard JSON, natively supported by all programming languages
  • Supports multiple geometry types: Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiPolygon, etc.
  • Can carry attribute data and supports FeatureCollection for batch organizing features

Common Use Cases

  • Data exchange for web maps and online mapping services
  • Geospatial data storage and display in mobile applications
  • Sharing and transporting GIS data across platforms

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your CSV file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.

  2. 2

The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.

  3. 3

Download the GeoJSON file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
