About

GeoJSON

GeoJSON is a geospatial data interchange format based on JSON. It can represent Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiPoint, MultiLineString, MultiPolygon, and GeometryCollection geometries. Defined by RFC 7946, GeoJSON has become one of the most popular data exchange formats in web GIS. GeoJSON files use WGS84 coordinates and support Feature objects with associated properties and FeatureCollections for organizing multiple features.

Shapefile

ESRI Shapefile is a vector data format developed by ESRI and one of the most widely used formats in GIS. A Shapefile actually consists of multiple files: .shp stores geometry, .shx stores spatial index, .dbf stores attributes, and .prj stores coordinate reference system information. Common practice is to package these files into a ZIP archive for distribution. Shapefile supports three basic geometry types: point, line, and polygon.

Conversion trade-offs

GeoJSON: limitations to know

  • Text format results in larger file sizes, not suitable for massive datasets
  • Does not support topology or spatial indexing

Shapefile: what you gain

  • Industry standard with the best compatibility for data exchange
  • Excellent read performance, suitable for large-scale datasets
  • Extensive third-party library and tool support

Why convert GeoJSON to Shapefile?

GeoJSON is the native language of the web, but most desktop GIS workflows still expect a Shapefile. ArcGIS and QGIS projects, national mapping agencies, and legacy ETL pipelines commonly require .shp input. Converting GeoJSON to SHP gives you a format that every GIS package since the 1990s can open, with attributes in a dBASE table that analysts can join against other data. It is the typical step when archiving web-collected data, sharing with colleagues on desktop GIS, or feeding data into tools that predate the GeoJSON era.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get one file or several?

A Shapefile always consists of multiple files (.shp, .dbf, .shx). The converter produces the complete set so the result opens directly in ArcGIS, QGIS, or any GIS software.

What happens to my property names longer than 10 characters?

dBASE field names are limited to 10 characters, so long property names are shortened automatically. Review the output if your properties carry long names.

Can a mixed FeatureCollection be converted?

A Shapefile holds a single geometry type. Mixed collections are split by geometry type (points, lines, polygons) so nothing is lost.

Shapefile at a glance

Key Features

  • Natively supported by virtually all GIS software with the best compatibility
  • Supports three basic geometry types: point, line, and polygon
  • Supports attribute tables (dBASE format) for storing feature properties

Common Use Cases

  • Geographic data publishing and sharing by government agencies and enterprises
  • Primary data storage and exchange in GIS projects
  • Standard data format for traditional desktop GIS software

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your GeoJSON file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.

  2. 2

The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.

  3. 3

Download the Shapefile file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
