About

TIGER/Line

TIGER/Line (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) is a series of geographic data products published by the US Census Bureau. TIGER data includes road networks, administrative boundaries, census areas, hydrographic features, and more, representing one of the most comprehensive public geographic datasets in the United States. RT1 is the classic exchange format for TIGER/Line data.

DXF

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data exchange format developed by Autodesk, the native interchange format for AutoCAD. DXF stores vector graphic data in text format, including points, lines, polygons, text annotations, and layer information. In GIS, DXF is commonly used for data exchange with CAD systems, and many survey and engineering data are provided in DXF format.

Conversion trade-offs

TIGER/Line: limitations to know

  • Only covers US territory
  • Limited coordinate precision, not suitable for precise surveying

DXF: what you gain

  • Supported by virtually all CAD software and many GIS applications
  • Suitable for exchanging data with engineering surveys

Why convert TIGER/Line to DXF?

Converting TIGER/Line to DXF is one of the most common workflows in GIS. TIGER/Line data usually comes from desktop GIS software, government open-data portals, or data exchange with partners, while DXF is what modern tools, web maps, and platforms expect. This converter bridges the two: it reads your TIGER/Line files, keeps geometry and attributes intact, and writes clean DXF output — entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device.

Is the TIGER/Line to DXF converter free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no usage limits.

Are coordinate systems preserved when converting TIGER/Line to DXF?

By default the output keeps the source coordinate system. If your TIGER/Line file uses a projected CRS (like UTM), you can search any EPSG coordinate system by keyword or code and reproject in one step. Note: output formats that require WGS84 by specification (KML, KMZ, GPX) always reproject to WGS84 automatically.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes — drop several TIGER/Line files at once and each one produces its own DXF output.

Key Features

  • AutoCAD native exchange format, universal in CAD industry
  • Text format readable, easy to parse programmatically
  • Supports rich graphic attributes including layers, colors, and line types

Common Use Cases

  • Importing CAD engineering drawings into GIS systems
  • Cross-platform exchange of survey and planning data

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your TIGER/Line file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.

  2. 2

The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.

  3. 3

Download the DXF file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
