DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data exchange format developed by Autodesk, the native interchange format for AutoCAD. DXF stores vector graphic data in text format, including points, lines, polygons, text annotations, and layer information. In GIS, DXF is commonly used for data exchange with CAD systems, and many survey and engineering data are provided in DXF format.
GeoJSON is a geospatial data interchange format based on JSON. It can represent Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiPoint, MultiLineString, MultiPolygon, and GeometryCollection geometries. Defined by RFC 7946, GeoJSON has become one of the most popular data exchange formats in web GIS. GeoJSON files use WGS84 coordinates and support Feature objects with associated properties and FeatureCollections for organizing multiple features.
CAD is where infrastructure is designed: site plans, utility networks, parcel layouts, building footprints. GIS and web maps, however, cannot directly use DXF geometry. Converting DXF to GeoJSON moves drawings from AutoCAD into the geospatial world — polylines become LineStrings, closed shapes become Polygons, layers become properties you can filter and style by. It is the standard step when CAD plans need to appear in a GIS, a web map, or a spatial database.
Yes — the source layer name is stored as a property on every feature, so your layer structure survives for filtering and styling.
LINE, LWPOLYLINE, POLYLINE, POINT, CIRCLE and ARC are converted. Annotation, hatching and dimension entities have no geometry equivalent and are skipped.
CAD files often use local coordinates. If your drawing is georeferenced the coordinates pass through; otherwise assign the correct CRS after converting.
Upload your DXF file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.
The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.
Download the GeoJSON file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
