About

DXF

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data exchange format developed by Autodesk, the native interchange format for AutoCAD. DXF stores vector graphic data in text format, including points, lines, polygons, text annotations, and layer information. In GIS, DXF is commonly used for data exchange with CAD systems, and many survey and engineering data are provided in DXF format.

Excel

Microsoft Excel format (.xlsx and .xls) is the most commonly used spreadsheet format. Similar to CSV, coordinate columns in Excel files can be used to create geographic features. XLSX is the modern Office Open XML format, and XLS is the traditional binary format. Excel format offers advantages over CSV including multiple worksheets, data type validation, and formatting.

Conversion trade-offs

DXF: limitations to know

  • Limited coordinate system support, usually no spatial reference information
  • Potentially large file sizes, complex graphics difficult to parse

Excel: what you gain

  • Non-technical users can directly edit geographic data in Excel
  • Supports large number of rows (XLSX supports over 1 million rows)

Why convert DXF to Excel?

Converting DXF to Excel is one of the most common workflows in GIS. DXF data usually comes from desktop GIS software, government open-data portals, or data exchange with partners, while Excel is what modern tools, web maps, and platforms expect. This converter bridges the two: it reads your DXF files, keeps geometry and attributes intact, and writes clean Excel output — entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device.

Is the DXF to Excel converter free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no usage limits.

Are coordinate systems preserved when converting DXF to Excel?

By default the output keeps the source coordinate system. If your DXF file uses a projected CRS (like UTM), you can search any EPSG coordinate system by keyword or code and reproject in one step. Note: output formats that require WGS84 by specification (KML, KMZ, GPX) always reproject to WGS84 automatically.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes — drop several DXF files at once and each one produces its own Excel output.

Excel at a glance

Key Features

  • Supports multiple worksheets, data types, and formatting with richer expression than CSV
  • Deep integration with Microsoft Office ecosystem
  • Can be converted to GIS formats like GeoJSON and Shapefile via coordinate columns

Common Use Cases

  • Extracting coordinate data from business Excel reports
  • Structured management of batch address and coordinate data

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your DXF file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.

  2. 2

The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.

  3. 3

Download the Excel file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
