About

  • UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) divides Earth into 60 zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide.
  • Zone number = floor((longitude + 180) / 6) + 1.
  • Easting is the distance east from the zone's central meridian; northing is distance north from the equator.
  • UTM coordinates are in meters, ideal for field surveying and large-scale mapping.

How to Use

  1. 1

Enter a WGS84 latitude and longitude in decimal degrees — a single point or one pair per line for batch conversion.

  2. 2

Click Convert and the tool calculates the UTM zone from your longitude, then projects the point into zone coordinates, reporting the zone number, hemisphere, easting, and northing in meters.

  3. 3

Copy the full UTM coordinate (for example 50N 447482E 4420148N) for field surveying, hiking grids, or military-style references. Free and unlimited, all in the browser.

FAQ

QHow is the UTM zone number determined?

AThe world is divided into 60 zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide, numbered 1-60 starting at 180°W. The formula is zone = floor((longitude + 180) / 6) + 1; Beijing at 116.4°E falls in zone 50. The tool also appends the latitude band letter (C-X, omitting I and O).

QWhy is my easting close to 500,000?

AEach zone's central meridian is assigned a false easting of exactly 500,000 m so that all eastings stay positive. Values range from about 166,000 m at the western edge to 833,000 m at the eastern edge; an easting of 500,000 means you are on the central meridian itself.

QHow are southern hemisphere locations handled?

ANorthings in the southern hemisphere are measured upward from the south pole using a false northing of 10,000,000 m at the equator, so they always remain positive. The tool detects the hemisphere from your latitude's sign and labels the result N or S accordingly.
