About

  • DMS (Degrees, Minutes, Seconds) is the traditional format used by GPS devices and surveyors.
  • Decimal degrees divide a degree into fractional parts, easier for computation.
  • 1 degree = 60 minutes, 1 minute = 60 seconds.
  • Hemisphere suffixes (N/S/E/W) indicate the position relative to the equator and prime meridian.

How to Use

  1. 1

Type or paste decimal degree coordinates, for example 39.9042, 116.4074. Enter a single point or one pair per line for batch conversion.

  2. 2

Click Convert and each decimal value is decomposed into whole degrees, minutes, and seconds, with the hemisphere suffix (N/S for latitude, E/W for longitude) attached automatically.

  3. 3

Copy the formatted result such as 39°54'15"N 116°24'14"E. The conversion is instant, free, and runs entirely in your browser.

FAQ

QWhat does the DMS output format look like?

AEach coordinate becomes three parts: degrees, then minutes (1/60 of a degree), then seconds (1/60 of a minute), for example 116°24'14"E. The trailing letter gives the hemisphere — N or S for latitude, E or W for longitude.

QHow precise is one second of arc?

AOne second of latitude spans about 30.9 meters on the ground, so DMS with whole seconds locates a point to roughly a house-sized area. Decimal fractions of a second can be appended when finer precision is needed.

QWhat happens to negative decimal coordinates?

AThe sign is converted into a hemisphere letter: a negative latitude becomes S and a negative longitude becomes W, with the degrees shown as a positive number. -33.8688 therefore reads 33°52'8"S.
