About

  • DMS notation expresses coordinates as degrees, minutes and seconds (e.g. 116°24'14"E).
  • Decimal degrees represent the same position as a single fractional number.
  • Conversion formula: decimal = degrees + minutes/60 + seconds/3600.
  • Supports both hemisphere suffixes (N/S/E/W) and negative sign input.

How to Use

  1. 1

Enter coordinates in degrees, minutes, seconds form — for example 116°24'14"E or 39 54 15 N. Symbols, plain spaces, and mixed separators are all accepted.

  2. 2

Click Convert and the tool parses the DMS parts, applies degrees + minutes/60 + seconds/3600, and applies the hemisphere letter as a sign.

  3. 3

Copy the decimal degree result, ready for mapping APIs and GIS software. Conversion is free, instant, and happens right in the page.

FAQ

QWhich DMS input formats does the parser accept?

AIt tolerates the common variants: degree/minute/second symbols (116°24'14"E), space-separated numbers (39 54 15 N), and entries with or without hemisphere letters. You can also use negative signs instead of S/W.

QHow is a DMS coordinate converted to decimal degrees?

AEach unit is expressed as a fraction of a degree: decimal = degrees + minutes/60 + seconds/3600. For 116°24'14"E that gives 116 + 24/60 + 14/3600 = 116.40389°, and the hemisphere letter decides the final sign.

QWhy did my result come out negative?

ASouthern latitudes (S) and western longitudes (W) are represented as negative decimal degrees by convention. If you entered 33°52'8"S, the output -33.86889 is the same location expressed the way most software expects it.
