About

Polygon to Line converts the boundaries of polygon features into line features. Every polygon outline becomes a LineString (or MultiLineString) carrying the original feature's full attribute table — so a layer of administrative areas becomes a layer of administrative boundaries ready for network or styling workflows.

Converting areas to boundary lines is needed when a tool expects line input (flow routing, boundary symbolization, linear referencing), when preparing hatch or outline styling, or when deriving features like coastline or parcel-edge datasets from area layers. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with zero data upload.

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your polygon layer; the source preview confirms the loaded features.

  2. 2

Run the conversion — each polygon's outline is extracted as line geometry while all attributes are copied to the new line feature, processed locally in the browser.

  3. 3

Compare the source data and converted lines on the map preview, then download the line layer.

FAQ

QAre holes in polygons converted too?

AYes. Interior rings become part of the output line geometry, typically as a MultiLineString containing both the outer boundary and the hole edges, so no boundary information is lost.

QDo the lines keep the polygon attributes?

AYes, every attribute of the source polygon is copied onto its boundary line feature, so you can still filter, label, or style the lines by the original fields.

QWhat happens with multipolygon features?

AEach part of a multipolygon contributes its own boundary, and the result is a single line feature containing all those boundaries. The feature count therefore stays the same as the input layer — only the geometry type changes.

QIs there a tool for the reverse conversion (lines to polygons)?

AThis tool handles one direction only. If you need to close lines into polygons, that typically requires the lines to form closed rings — the Geometry Repair tool's ring-closing capability can help prepare such data.
