About

Shapefile

ESRI Shapefile is a vector data format developed by ESRI and one of the most widely used formats in GIS. A Shapefile actually consists of multiple files: .shp stores geometry, .shx stores spatial index, .dbf stores attributes, and .prj stores coordinate reference system information. Common practice is to package these files into a ZIP archive for distribution. Shapefile supports three basic geometry types: point, line, and polygon.

CSV

CSV is a plain text table format with comma-separated columns. In GIS, CSV is commonly used to store tabular data with coordinate columns (such as longitude, latitude). While CSV itself is not a geospatial format, by specifying coordinate fields, tabular data can be converted to geometric features like points, lines, or polygons. CSV is the most common way to export geographic data from spreadsheets, databases, and sensors.

Conversion trade-offs

Shapefile: limitations to know

  • Consists of multiple files, inconvenient to manage and distribute
  • Field names limited to 10 characters with limited attribute types
  • Single file size limited to 2GB

CSV: what you gain

  • Most universal format, can be generated and read by virtually all systems
  • Easy to manually edit and review
  • Suitable for batch conversion and import of coordinate data

Why convert Shapefile to CSV?

Converting Shapefile to CSV is one of the most common workflows in GIS. Shapefile data usually comes from desktop GIS software, government open-data portals, or data exchange with partners, while CSV is what modern tools, web maps, and platforms expect. This converter bridges the two: it reads your Shapefile files, keeps geometry and attributes intact, and writes clean CSV output — entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device.

Is the Shapefile to CSV converter free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no usage limits.

Are coordinate systems preserved when converting Shapefile to CSV?

By default the output keeps the source coordinate system. If your Shapefile file uses a projected CRS (like UTM), you can search any EPSG coordinate system by keyword or code and reproject in one step. Note: output formats that require WGS84 by specification (KML, KMZ, GPX) always reproject to WGS84 automatically.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes — drop several Shapefile files at once and each one produces its own CSV output.

CSV at a glance

Key Features

  • Plain text format supported by all spreadsheet software and programming languages
  • Small file size, fast generation and parsing
  • Can be converted to various GIS formats by specifying coordinate fields

Common Use Cases

  • Converting address coordinate data from Excel or databases to GIS formats
  • Batch importing data from GPS devices and sensors
  • Batch processing of POI (Point of Interest) and address data

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your Shapefile file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.

  2. 2

The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.

  3. 3

Download the CSV file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
