About

CSV

CSV is a plain text table format with comma-separated columns. In GIS, CSV is commonly used to store tabular data with coordinate columns (such as longitude, latitude). While CSV itself is not a geospatial format, by specifying coordinate fields, tabular data can be converted to geometric features like points, lines, or polygons. CSV is the most common way to export geographic data from spreadsheets, databases, and sensors.

Excel

Microsoft Excel format (.xlsx and .xls) is the most commonly used spreadsheet format. Similar to CSV, coordinate columns in Excel files can be used to create geographic features. XLSX is the modern Office Open XML format, and XLS is the traditional binary format. Excel format offers advantages over CSV including multiple worksheets, data type validation, and formatting.

Conversion trade-offs

CSV: limitations to know

  • Does not support geometry types (point/line/polygon), only coordinate points
  • No coordinate reference system information
  • Lacks compression for large datasets

Excel: what you gain

  • Non-technical users can directly edit geographic data in Excel
  • Supports large number of rows (XLSX supports over 1 million rows)

Why convert CSV to Excel?

Converting CSV to Excel is one of the most common workflows in GIS. CSV data usually comes from desktop GIS software, government open-data portals, or data exchange with partners, while Excel is what modern tools, web maps, and platforms expect. This converter bridges the two: it reads your CSV files, keeps geometry and attributes intact, and writes clean Excel output — entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device.

Is the CSV to Excel converter free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no usage limits.

Are coordinate systems preserved when converting CSV to Excel?

By default the output keeps the source coordinate system. If your CSV file uses a projected CRS (like UTM), you can search any EPSG coordinate system by keyword or code and reproject in one step. Note: output formats that require WGS84 by specification (KML, KMZ, GPX) always reproject to WGS84 automatically.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes — drop several CSV files at once and each one produces its own Excel output.

Excel at a glance

Key Features

  • Supports multiple worksheets, data types, and formatting with richer expression than CSV
  • Deep integration with Microsoft Office ecosystem
  • Can be converted to GIS formats like GeoJSON and Shapefile via coordinate columns

Common Use Cases

  • Extracting coordinate data from business Excel reports
  • Structured management of batch address and coordinate data

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your CSV file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.

  2. 2

The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.

  3. 3

Download the Excel file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
