About

CSV

CSV is a plain text table format with comma-separated columns. In GIS, CSV is commonly used to store tabular data with coordinate columns (such as longitude, latitude). While CSV itself is not a geospatial format, by specifying coordinate fields, tabular data can be converted to geometric features like points, lines, or polygons. CSV is the most common way to export geographic data from spreadsheets, databases, and sensors.

MIF/MID

MapInfo MIF (MapInfo Interchange Format) is MapInfo's data exchange format. MIF files store geometric graphics data, and MID files store corresponding attribute data. Unlike TAB format, MIF/MID is a plain text format more suitable for cross-platform data exchange. Many GIS software use MIF/MID as a bridge for interacting with MapInfo data.

Conversion trade-offs

CSV: limitations to know

  • Does not support geometry types (point/line/polygon), only coordinate points
  • No coordinate reference system information
  • Lacks compression for large datasets

MIF/MID: what you gain

  • Better suited for data exchange compared to TAB format

Why convert CSV to MIF/MID?

Converting CSV to MIF/MID is one of the most common workflows in GIS. CSV data usually comes from desktop GIS software, government open-data portals, or data exchange with partners, while MIF/MID is what modern tools, web maps, and platforms expect. This converter bridges the two: it reads your CSV files, keeps geometry and attributes intact, and writes clean MIF/MID output — entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device.

Is the CSV to MIF/MID converter free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no usage limits.

Are coordinate systems preserved when converting CSV to MIF/MID?

By default the output keeps the source coordinate system. If your CSV file uses a projected CRS (like UTM), you can search any EPSG coordinate system by keyword or code and reproject in one step. Note: output formats that require WGS84 by specification (KML, KMZ, GPX) always reproject to WGS84 automatically.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes — drop several CSV files at once and each one produces its own MIF/MID output.

MIF/MID at a glance

Key Features

  • Plain text format, easy for cross-platform exchange
  • MIF stores geometry, MID stores attributes, clear structure

Common Use Cases

  • Exchanging MapInfo data with other GIS systems
  • Exporting MapInfo data for use in open-source GIS

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your CSV file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.

  2. 2

The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.

  3. 3

Download the MIF/MID file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
