About

TIGER/Line

TIGER/Line (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) is a series of geographic data products published by the US Census Bureau. TIGER data includes road networks, administrative boundaries, census areas, hydrographic features, and more, representing one of the most comprehensive public geographic datasets in the United States. RT1 is the classic exchange format for TIGER/Line data.

MIF/MID

MapInfo MIF (MapInfo Interchange Format) is MapInfo's data exchange format. MIF files store geometric graphics data, and MID files store corresponding attribute data. Unlike TAB format, MIF/MID is a plain text format more suitable for cross-platform data exchange. Many GIS software use MIF/MID as a bridge for interacting with MapInfo data.

Conversion trade-offs

TIGER/Line: limitations to know

  • Only covers US territory
  • Limited coordinate precision, not suitable for precise surveying

MIF/MID: what you gain

  • Better suited for data exchange compared to TAB format

Why convert TIGER/Line to MIF/MID?

Converting TIGER/Line to MIF/MID is one of the most common workflows in GIS. TIGER/Line data usually comes from desktop GIS software, government open-data portals, or data exchange with partners, while MIF/MID is what modern tools, web maps, and platforms expect. This converter bridges the two: it reads your TIGER/Line files, keeps geometry and attributes intact, and writes clean MIF/MID output — entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device.

Is the TIGER/Line to MIF/MID converter free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no usage limits.

Are coordinate systems preserved when converting TIGER/Line to MIF/MID?

By default the output keeps the source coordinate system. If your TIGER/Line file uses a projected CRS (like UTM), you can search any EPSG coordinate system by keyword or code and reproject in one step. Note: output formats that require WGS84 by specification (KML, KMZ, GPX) always reproject to WGS84 automatically.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes — drop several TIGER/Line files at once and each one produces its own MIF/MID output.

Key Features

  • Plain text format, easy for cross-platform exchange
  • MIF stores geometry, MID stores attributes, clear structure

Common Use Cases

  • Exchanging MapInfo data with other GIS systems
  • Exporting MapInfo data for use in open-source GIS

How to Use

  1. 1

Upload your TIGER/Line file — drag and drop it onto the page, or browse from your device. You can add several files at once for batch conversion.

  2. 2

The conversion runs automatically in your browser. No upload, no server — your data stays on your device the entire time.

  3. 3

Download the MIF/MID file. Each input produces its own output, ready to use in your GIS, web map, or archive.
